Newark - U.S. Senators Robert Menendez and Frank R. Lautenberg today announced that the City of Trenton will receive more than $3.1 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for community and economic development, and to provide emergency shelter and affordable housing opportunities for low-income families.
"This critical funding will spur economic opportunity as Trenton develops decent and affordable housing options for its residents -- both of which are absolutely needed in this tough economic climate," said Menendez, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation and Community Development. "I will continue fighting to secure this funding for our New Jersey communities to ensure that all New Jerseyans, especially the most vulnerable, have a roof over their head."
"This federal funding will enhance Trenton neighborhoods and improve affordable housing options for local families,"said Lautenberg, a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing andUrban Development, which funds these programs. "Affordable, safe housing is the cornerstone of our neighborhoods, and wewillcontinue fighting to secure federal resources that strengthen communities throughout New Jersey."
A total of $3,137,301 will be distributed through three HUD programs as follows:
$2,334,620 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for economic and community revitalization and to develop viable housing options in low to middle income areas.
$562,701 in HOME Investment Partnership grants to fund a wide range of housing programs that seek to expand affordable housing for low - and very low-income individuals and families.
$239,980 in Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG) to expand and improve the quality and quantity of homeless shelters.
