Menendez, Lautenberg Announce Federal Grant for New Jersey to Hire 1,000 Workers for Hurricane Sandy Clean-Up

NEWARK-U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) will provide emergency funding for New Jersey to hire approximately 1,000 temporary workers to assist with hurricane clean-up activities. The DOL's National Emergency Grant of nearly $16 million will allow the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development to hire eligible workers to assist with clean-up and recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

"This funding will put New Jerseyans to work cleaning up their own communities and helping their neighbors," said Senator Lautenberg. "This storm has displaced thousands of workers, and this federal funding will provide temporary employment while residents gets back on their feet. I want to thank the Obama Administration for moving this critical funding quickly to our state."

"As businesses struggle to re-open and New Jerseyans find themselves temporarily out of work, this grant will bring needed relief to our labor force," said Senator Menendez. "I cannot think of a more sensible plan to help New Jesreyans stay afloat than giving them the opportunity to rebuild their communities and help their neighbors during this long and hard recovery. I applaud the Department of Labor for taking this initiative and will continue to work with them in the weeks ahead."

The funding will provide temporary employment on projects to assist with clean-up, demolition, repair, renovation, and reconstruction of destroyed public structures, facilities, and lands within the affected communities, as well as the delivery of humanitarian aid and safety assistance. These funds may be used to perform work on the homes of economically disadvantaged individuals who are eligible for the federally funded weatherization program, with priority given to services for the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

The counties in New Jersey that are eligible for portions of this grant are those that received the initial Presidential disaster declaration: Atlantic, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Union.
