Menendez Lauds Confirmation of Senator John Kerry as the Next Secretary of State

Says “The State Department Could Not Be In Better Hands”

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today applauded the swift confirmation of U.S. Senator John Kerry (D-MA) as the next Secretary of State. Not even one week after Kerry appeared before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a hearing which Menendez presided over, the Senate confirmed President Obama's nominee.

Senator Menendez's full statement in support of Kerry's confirmation is below:

"John Kerry's exhaustive experience and selfless service as a veteran, a senator and a statesman will help him to step seamlessly into the role of Secretary of State. I am confident that his vast experience and his relationships with the world's political and military leaders will serve the President and the nation in furtherance of American foreign policy.

"It has been my honor and privilege to serve under Senator Kerry's leadership as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and I look forward to continuing to work with the Secretary on the issues he has championed over the years: fighting global terrorism; preventing the spread of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons; fighting for human rights and against HIV/AIDS around the world; fighting crime, corruption, and drug trafficking; and standing-up for the interests of our Foreign Service personnel around the world.

"In my view the State Department could not be in better hands. When it comes to America's role in world affairs, we agree that it is critical for the United States to remain fully engaged and to project not only the power of our military strength where necessary, but the wisdom of our democratic ideals.

"I thank Secretary Kerry for his service and wish him well as he undertakes this important new role."
