Menendez Introduces Resolution Honoring Hockey In Newark And The East Side High School Hockey Team

Senator Menendez lauds the New Jersey Devils for their support for the non-profit organization and local team

Washington - Today, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez introduced a resolution in the Senate to honor Hockey in Newark and the New Jersey Devils for their important work in providing a solid foundation for dozens of Newark students through youth hockey programs. The Newark-based National Hockey League team has helped give dozens of young Newark residents an opportunity to play hockey at the Prudential Center, allowing students, like the members of the Newark East Side Hockey Team, to trade downtime for sports and stay out of situations that could put their future in jeopardy.

"Inner-city students too often face challenges in their afterschool hours, which put their academic performance and development at risk. Sports can be a valuable afterschool activity that keeps students focused on realizing their potential in and outside of the classroom," said Senator Menendez. "Before the New Jersey Devils made Newark their home, hockey was not seen as an option for Newark students. Today, thanks to Devils, the NHL and their support for Hockey in Newark, there are dozens of young students who have not only become devoted to the sport, but also stay out of trouble so they can fulfill their potential."

The East Side Hockey Team, which barely existed with 5 players in 2003, has grown to have over 100 players with the help and support of its coaches Keith Veltre and Dennis Ruppe and the sponsorship of the New Jersey Devils and the East Side High School Hockey team.

Hockey in Newark is a non-profit organization created from the need to support young Newark hockey players, offers education-based programs, highlights academic achievement and promotes teamwork.
