Menendez: House GOP Votes To Undermine Protections For Women

Washington - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) called today's refusal by Republicans in the House of Representatives to approve a bipartisan-backed Senate extension of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) a "harmful, dangerous effort to undermine protections for all victims of domestic violence."

"How can we believe Republicans understand that we must protect and defend each and every victim of domestic violence when they refuse to extend VAWA protections to all women?" said Menendez. "Violence against any woman is an outrage and all women deserve to be protected under this law."

Rather than passing the bi-partisan Senate VAWA reauthorization, which expands protections from discrimination and abuse to Native American women, the LGBT community and immigrants, House Republicans wrote and passed a bill that not only strips these provisions, but rolls back existing protections.

Menendez spoke yesterday about the importance of passing the Senate's bipartisan VAWA extension bill. Click Here for the video.
