Menendez Demands Answers from State Dept., Others on Roles in Trump Coercion of Foreign Leader for Personal Political Gain

‘The country has now seen a glimpse of the President's conduct with a foreign leader, and the takeaway is pretty stunning’

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today held a media availability in Atlantic City to discuss his efforts to get answers from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the State Department’s role in President Trump’s coercion of Ukrainian President Zelensky to investigate a domestic political opponent.

In a letter released this morning, Sen. Menendez demanded the Secretary immediately testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to answer a series of national security questions following revelations in a declassified whistleblower complaint that senior State Department officials were both on the line and briefed after President Trump pressured Zelensky to influence the 2020 election.

The letter follows actions earlier in the week including:

  • Remarks on the floor of the Senate announcing a series of Congressional actions to get to the truth behind the allegations of abuse of power by the President during his call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
  • Calling on Republicans to pass the Senator’s bill to ensure the American people and Congress received a full accounting of President Trump’s efforts to leverage security assistance to Ukraine for his personal gain.
