Menendez, Booker Announce $6.3 for Head Start, Early Head Start in Bergen, Essex Counties

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker today announced that Greater Bergen Community Action and Montclair Child Development Center have been awarded a combined $6.3 million in federal funding from the Department of Health and Human Services to support their Head Start and Early Head Start programs.

“Every child – no matter where they live or how much their parents earn – deserves an opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Sen. Menendez. “Proven programs like Head Start are the best way we can ensure children from lower income families enter school fully prepared to learn and succeed. I'm so pleased that this funding will help Greater Bergen Community Action and Montclair Child Development Center provide more young children in New Jersey the early learning skills they need to become the leaders of tomorrow."

“Key investments like this in our young people are the best way to help them reach their full potential while fostering the success our future leaders,” said Sen. Booker. “I stand committed to helping ensure all children have access to a quality early education in order to level the playing field and create equal opportunities for all.”

Head Start promotes the school readiness of children ages birth to five from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development. Head Start programs provide comprehensive services to enrolled children and their families, which include health, nutrition, social services and other services determined to be necessary by family needs assessments, in addition to education and cognitive development services.

The grants:

  • $4 million to Greater Bergen Community Action in Hackensack
  • $2.3 million to Montclair Child Development Center
