Menendez Applauds Senate Approval Extending Emergency Unemployment Insurance
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez applauded Senate passage today of bipartisan legislation extending unemployment insurance for the long-term unemployed. This 5-month extension also allows recipients to receive retroactive payments going back to December 28th, when this emergency aid for the jobless first expired. The measure now heads to the Republican-controlled House.
"Tonight the Senate stood up for the interests of middle-class families by extending this lifeline to millions of Americans looking for work - including more than 140,000 New Jerseyans. For months, hardworking people have been struggling to find decent jobs and keep up with the bills without the modest support emergency unemployment insurance provides. They've had enough. It's time for House Republicans to finish the job, put people above politics and extend this emergency assistance."
Based on the U.S. Department of Labor's "Emergency Unemployment Compensation Activity", New Jersey's economy lost $365,139,763 in the first three months of the year due to the Dec. 28 expiration of federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation.
