NEWARK, NJ - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement regarding the terror attacks in Canada:
"Today in Ottawa, during this period of national mourning and trauma in Canada, Members of Parliament assembled for work in the House of Commons, demonstrating that democracy, freedom, and liberty are unassailable principles that serve as the bedrock of Canadian society.
"Throughout the country, and particularly in Ottawa, Canadians displayed their resilience and compassion; fortitude and solidarity by honoring fallen soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at Canada's National War Memorial and celebrating Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers in parliament.
"We in the United States are all too familiar with terrorist attacks targeting our institutions and threatening our society. When terrorists struck our country on September 11th, Canadians opened up their homes to countless stranded American travelers as U.S. airspace was closed to all international air travel. Canadians showed their compassion and decency during our time of need by welcoming strangers into their homes and communities. As Canada confronts the challenges made clear in recent days, we in the United States stand in solidarity and unity with our friend, ally, and neighbor."
