Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today welcomed the unanimous passage by the Senate of a resolution commemorating the 192th Anniversary of Greek Independence Day, March 25, 2013 and honoring the members of the Greek-American community who have helped maintain the strongest bonds between our countries.

"With this resolution, we join with millions of Greek-Americans in celebrating Greece's Independence 192 years ago," Menendez said. "This day marks more than Greece's independence from the Ottoman Empire - it recognizes the contributions of Greece to a democratic system of governance based on the principles of equality and freedom, as well as the Greek nation's continuing influence among the community of nations. Greek ideas and ideals continue to have an enormous influence and I am honored to stand with the Hellenic community to honor their cultural heritage and contributions. As the new Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, I will continue my work to protect and promote our nation's valuable relationship with Greece."

The Resolution was co-authored by Senator Menendez and Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) and co-sponsored by 29 other Senators: Begich, Blunt, Boxer, Brown, Cardin, Carper, Casey, Chambliss, Cochran, Durbin, Enzi, Feinstein, Gillibrand, Isakson, Johnson (SD), Kirk, Lautenberg, Levin, Manchin, Mikulski, Murphy, Nelson, Reed, Rockefeller, Rubio, Schumer, Shaheen, Whitehouse, and Wyden.
