Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, applauded the passage of a resolution commemorating the 193rd Anniversary of Greek Independence Day, March 25, 2014 and honoring the members of the Greek-American community who have worked hard to maintain strong bonds between our countries.

"Today I am proud to join Greek-Americans across the United States in celebrating Greece's Independence 193 years ago with this resolution," Menendez said. "This day marks more than Greece's independence from the Ottoman Empire - it recognizes the contributions of Greece to a democratic system of governance based on the principles of equality and freedom. Greek values and ideals contributed to the founding of our nation and continue to contribute to democracies around the world. I am honored to stand with the Hellenic community to honor their cultural heritage and contributions. As Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, I will continue my work to protect and promote our nation's valuable relationship with Greece."

The Resolution was co-authored by Senator Menendez and Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) and co-sponsored by 23 other Senators: Begich, Brown, Boxer, Cardin, Carper, Casey, Chambliss, Cochran, Durbin, Gillibrand, Kirk, Johnson (SD), Levin, Manchin, Mikulski, Murphy, Nelson, Schumer, Shaheen, Reed, Rockefeller, Whitehouse, and Wyden.
