Three towns in Bergen and Passaic counties are getting federal grant money to aid their emergency service operations.
* The Garfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps will get $125,643 toward the purchase of a new ambulance.
* The Totowa Fire Department will receive more than $87,566 for new protective apparel.
* The Hackensack Fire Department will receive $66,600 for operations and safety.

Bloomberg News: Obama Looks to Congress and Vice Versa to Kick Off U.S. Tax Code Overhaul

President Barack Obama and congressional leaders haven’t determined a clear path to an overhaul of the U.S. tax code, in part because no one wants to be the first to propose taking away popular tax breaks.
This reticence, say veterans of the last major rewrite of the tax code in 1986, stems from worries about how this issue may play out in the 2012 election.
Given that, there must be some “shame factor” in failing to act on a tax code overhaul, or it is unlikely to occur in this election cycle, Eugene Steuerle, co-director of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center in Washington, said yesterday.

Dow Jones Newswires: US Senate Democrats Propose Cuts To Oil, Gas Subsidies

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Senate Democrats, looking to eliminate subsidies for oil and gas companies, introduced a bill Wednesday that they say will raise $20 billion over the next 10 years.
The bill, offered by Sen. Robert Menendez (D., N.J.) and seven other Democrats, would repeal several tax deductions offered to the oil and gas industry, such as a deduction for intangible drilling costs and a manufacturing deduction.
The bill would also impose an excise tax on oil and gas produced on federal lands, raising an estimated $5.3 billion.

Shore News Today: $51,000 grant to help support county homeless

EGG HARBOR CITY – Just days after it was announced that homelessness had increased in Atlantic County over 2009, Career Opportunity Development, Inc. in Egg Harbor City was named the recipient of a $51,442 federal homeless assistance grant.
On Jan. 28, U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg announced New Jersey would receive over $22 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist homeless men and women in New Jersey access housing opportunities.
Linda Carney, president and CEO of CODI, explained that the grant funds will be used for the operation of a house, in conjunction with the Atlantic City Rescue Mission in Weymouth.
