President Donald Trump’s decision to exclude funding for the Gateway Tunnel project from his proposed budget won’t be the last word.

Trump’s budget for the 12 months beginning Oct. 1 does not include any money for Gateway, and U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., said the president’s proposal also guts federal transportation programs that could be used to fund the project.

“The president’s budget, as far as we’re concerned, especially it related to transportation, is dead on arrival,” Menendez said outside the Capitol after the meeting.

Rosen was nominated as deputy attorney general to succeed Rod Rosenstein and Menendez said he expected him to be grilled on this at his upcoming Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing by Booker, a member of the panel.

“I don’t know how this guy is going to be deputy attorney general with lies like that,” Menendez said. “He is totally off base. We have to push back on those statements. It’s simply not true.”

Transportation Department spokesman Stephen Bradford did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gov. Phil Murphy has agreed to pay the state’s $600 million share of replacing the Portal Bridge with existing funds, rather than use a federal loan program to come up with the money.

“The governor is fully invested as a partner in this urgently needed infrastructure project, and is prepared to work with the Trump administration to ensure its completion,” Murphy spokesman Matthew Saidel said.
