Sen. Robert Menendez of Hoboken was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award yesterday from the New Jersey Sierra Club. The New Jersey Sierra Club presented Sen. Robert Menendez (D-Hoboken) with its Outstanding Achievement Award yesterday for his "longstanding commitment to the environment and leadership on environmental issues.''
The award specifically highlighted Menendez’s leadership in addressing global warming, preventing offshore drilling on the Atlantic Coast, and protecting the nation’s wild places, the Princeton-based club said in a news release.
“This is our highest honor, we would call it a lifetime achievement award, but we know Sen. Menendez will continue his great work and fight for the environment in the years to come,” club director Jeff Tittel said. “Sen. Menendez not only votes the right way, he is a dedicated environmental leader and champion.”
Menendez is widely considered a champion for reducing greenhouse gases and promoting the clean energy economy, the club said. The climate bill being considered by Congress would bring 58,000 jobs to the state, make New Jersey energy independent, and help consumers save money through efficiency measures, they said.
At the event, attended by Sierra Club volunteers, Menendez spoke about the need to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
