Rep. Mikie Sherrill and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez on Thursday touted funding secured for the Gateway Tunnel as part of a bipartisan budget deal as a victory for the state.

“This is another major victory that keeps the Gateway Project on the right track. Despite efforts by the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans to derail Gateway and slash funding for Amtrak, our delegation was able to secure the same funding levels for Amtrak as we did a year ago amid threats of shutting down the government,” said Menendez, who is ranking member of the Senate transportation subcommittee. “This funding is vital to moving this critical project forward to ensure the safety and reliability of our infrastructure and the hundreds of thousands who use it each day.”

Sherrill, who campaign as a moderate in 2018, opted not to criticize her colleagues across the aisle, instead focusing on the funding for New Jersey’s rail ways and more moderate border security measures included in the budget deal.

“The people of New Jersey sent me to Congress because they are tired of partisan gridlock,” she said. “They want to see our Congress get to work on legislation that will make people’s lives better. This spending agreement is exactly the type of bipartisan, bicameral legislation we need… We’re also moving America forward by investing billions to fix our crumbling rails and roads, including $650 million for the Northeast Corridor, more than double the President’s initial plans.”
