A New Jersey lawmaker wants to help protect New Jersey residents from ruining their credit due to medical debt.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez introduced the Medical Debt Relief Act, which would create a waiting period before hospitals can report medical debt. This would give the patient time to clear up any insurance disputes and pay off the bill.

“These are people who reliably meet their debt and pay their bills yet their medical debt is drowning them,” the senator said while discussing the bill.
