Much to gain, but more to lose.

That's the position Camden's Mount Ephraim South neighborhood could be in if deep cuts at the federal level slash a program designed to revitalized struggling neighborhoods.

"When we bring monies to Camden, it gets put into action," U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez said Monday when he appeared at Whitman Park alongside Mayor Dana Redd, Councilman Brian Coleman, city schools Superintendent Paymon Rouhanifard, Camden County Freeholder John Young and Camden Housing Authority Director Maria Marquez.

The Choice Neighborhoods Initiative addresses local strategies to help distressed public or U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-assisted housing through neighborhood transformation.

Camden was named late last month as one of nine finalists in the running to receive $30 million in funding the city requested. HUD representatives are slated to visit the city within the next two weeks to review the plans and visit the target areas...
