Homeowners have until Sept. 15 to ask the government to review their Hurricane Sandy damage claims, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said.

FEMA agreed to reconsider up to 141,800 insurance claims filed by Sandy homeowners amid allegations that companies and their engineering firms downplayed the extent of the damage after the storm.

The agency agreed to reopen the claims following a meeting with U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and New York's two U.S. senators. 

Letters started going out to homeowners May 18, and FEMA has said it will work to find victims who have moved. Each claim will be examined and homeowners not satisfied with the findings can request a second review by an independent party.
