The legislative fight to land tourist helicopters is now being fought on both sides of the Hudson River.
The New York City council introduced a bill on Thursday that would ban sightseeing helicopters from taking off or landing in city-owned heliports, according to the council's website. The proposed bill comes five months after New Jersey lawmakers announced a similar bill calling on the state Department of Transportation to bar the helicopters from landing at state-licensed facilities.
U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez called New York's proposed bill "an important step" for residents "plagued by the non-stop buzzing of helicopters overhead."
"Residents want these tourist helicopters grounded and they deserve relief from the incessant noise and pounding headaches," he said in a statement on Thursday. "The threat to public safety is very real and very troublesome, and this commonsense bill attempts to protect the people both in the air and on the ground."
