Members of the N.J. congressional delegation on Friday said new Federal Emergency Management Agency flood maps "may have exaggerated the flood risk" across the state, leading to higher insurance premiums.

In a letter to FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, the lawmakers said that the data used to draw the new maps overstate the risk of flooding in some areas of the state and asked the agency to take a look at the issue.

The lawmakers said that while Hurricane Sandy made them keenly aware of the risk of flooding, the data used overstated the danger.

"This difference has enormous implications for tens of thousands of New Jersey homeowners and small businesses," they wrote.
