Democratic members of New Jersey's congressional delegation said the U.S. Supreme Court's decision Thursday to uphold the subsidies paid under the Affordable Care Act should end the debate over whether to repeal the legislation.

The court ruled that policies obtained on both state-run and federally run exchanges were eligible for the subsidies that hold down the cost of health insurance and make it more affordable. The health-care law championed by President Obama has extended coverage to 6.4 million Americans, including 172,345 in New Jersey, even as congressional Republicans have held dozens of votes to repeal the statute.

"With today's ruling, the Supreme Court has made clear once and for all that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land and is here to stay," said U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.).
