Menendez welcomes Obama call for Congress to approve military action against ISIS

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez today applauded President Obama's decision to request congressional approval to use military force against the Islamic State.

Menendez (D-N.J.), the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he long has believed that Congress must vote to approve U.S. military actions against the group, designated as a terrorist organization by the State Department. The senator said that earlier congressional votes to authorize force after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and in 2002 after President George W. Bush said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, were not sufficient.

"I welcome the administration laying out the type of authorization they are seeking, and look forward to their continued involvement and engagement in order to achieve congressional approval," Menendez said in a statement. "It is vitally important that we act together."
