WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, the longest-serving Hispanic member of the U.S. Senate, lashed out against President Donald Trump Monday using the chief executive's favorite method of communication: Twitter.

In a series of tweets, Menendez called Trump's history of attacks on blacks and Hispanics 'heartbreaking, maddening, and disgusting.'" The tweets covered Trump's role in spreading the false rumor that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya and not Hawaii, his proclamation that the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who marched in Charlottesville contained some "very fine people," and his description of some African nations as "shithole countries."

Menendez, D-N.J., acted after basketball star LeBron James criticized the president and Trump responded -- on Twitter of course -- by attacking both the intelligence of the player and his CNN interviewer, Don Lemon. Both are black.

Menendez has been a fierce critic of Trump's immigration policy, which resulted in the forced separation of children from their parents who came to the U.S. seeking asylum.

The senator said the president "has broken with the basic standards of decency."
