Federal funds for mass transit in New Jersey are at risk of derailment as congressional opponents seek to pull the brakes on spending.

Sen. Robert Menendez and Rep. Albio Sires joined forces Monday to bolster a bill that would ensure federal funds for up to six years in order to keep construction of a new rail tunnel to New York on track.

If legislators fail to reach an agreement, New Jersey could lose access to federal funds by Friday.

The lawmakers say the federal bill faces opposition from their colleagues in rural states, who they say don't prioritize spending on mass transportation.
