U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez told the N.J. Chamber of Commerce on Thursday that the state risks losing federal highway funds if it doesn't fix the Transportation Trust Fund.

Menendez (D-N.J.) said many federal transportation programs required states to pay a share of the costs. The state's trust fund will soon only has enough cash to pay debt on existing bonds.

"New Jersey needs to fix the Transportation Trust Fund so that New Jersey can tap into these federal dollars that need a match," Menendez said during the chamber's annual Congressional Dinner at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel in Washington D.C. "We can have federal dollars but at the end of the day, if we cannot match the federal dollars, we cannot access them.''
