Sen. Robert Menendez announced a compromise Tuesday that will preserve his amendment to bar expedited trade deals with countries ranked among the world’s worst for human trafficking.

The New Jersey Democrat introduced the modified amendment with the Senate Finance Committee’s top-ranking Democrat, Ron Wyden, D-Ore., after negotiations with the White House, the U.S. trade representative and other colleagues on the Finance Committee.

“For the first time, we have an amendment in a major bill that would impose real consequences — real repercussions — for turning a blind-eye to recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing, or obtaining a person for compelled labor or commercial sex acts through the use of force, fraud, or coercion,” Menendez said on the Senate floor.
