Menendez, Booker urge state probe of insurance companies over Sandy fraud claims

New Jersey’s two U.S. senators called on the state Attorney General on Thursday to consider launching an investigation into alleged fraud by insurance companies that may have resulted in lower Superstorm Sandy-related claim payouts.

The move comes a day after the New York Attorney General’s Office searched the offices of a Long Island engineering firm accused of submitting bogus inspection reports for Sandy-damaged homes to minimize insurance payments to homeowners.

“The recently exposed actions to limit the proceeds for policyholders reaffirms what Sandy victims have long been telling us,” Sens. Bob Menendez and Cory Booker wrote in a letter to acting Attorney General John Jay Hoffman. They added, “If left unaddressed, these practices threaten to stunt our state’s recovery from Superstorm Sandy and leave many families without the ability to rebuild their homes and move on with their lives.”
