Feds award $1M for long-stalled Rahway River flood study

Union County mayors and freeholders today hailed the allocation of $1 million in federal funds to complete a long-stalled flood mitigation study along the 82-mile stretch of the Rahway River from Essex to Middlesex counties.

"This was my number one priority this term as far as obtaining Army Corps of Engineers funding," Sen. Robert Menendez said in a press conference at the Union municipal building. 

Menendez, in a joint statement with Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-10th Dist.), said the Army Corps had allocated $500,000 for the study this year, and another $500,000 is included in President Obama's fiscal year 2016 budget. The state has also allocated $1 million in matching funds.
