Transit riders would be able to put away $250 a month tax-free to cover their commuting costs, just like those who drive to work, under legislation moving through Congress.

The Senate Finance Committee this week voted to almost double the current $130 transit benefit to put it on an even level with the tax break currently given for parking at train stations or near places of work...

...The tax break, if approved by the full Senate and the House, would help defray the costs of the recently approved NJ Transit fare increase.

"This is money back in the pockets of transit riders in the face of rising fares," said U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), a member of the finance panel.
