Booker, Menendez seek federal help for Newark water system

U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez on Friday called on their colleagues to ensure funding is available to improve city water systems, including Newark's.

The lawmakers were among those insisting that Senate spending bills included money for programs offering low-interest loans to states and municipalities to install new pipes and make other improvements to their water systems...

"The crisis in Flint and the recent revelations of lead contamination in the drinking water at our Newark public schools shines a bright light on the failure to invest in our aging and often crumbling infrastructure," said Menendez (D-N.J.).

The lawmakers wrote to Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations interior subcommittee, and Tom Udall (D-N.M.), the panel's ranking member.
