U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez broke with President Obama and voted against giving him new authority to negotiate trade legislation.

Both Booker and Menendez voted against giving Obama the ability to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership and bring it back to Congress for an up--or-down vote without amendments, a process known as fast-track or trade promotion authority. The bill passed Friday night, 62-37, with just 14 Democrats supporting it...

...Menendez (D-N.J.) expressed concerns about granting the trade authority in April, and even winning approval of an amendment prohibiting agreements with countries with the worst records in human trafficking failed to change his vote.

"We will not be bowed because some want free trade at any cost — at any human cost — even if it means letting those nations that our own State Department has determined to be negligent, at best, in dealing with the scourge of human trafficking in their countries," Menendez said May 19.
