Bamboozled: Private data exposed, personal info in the ether? New bills would help

We live in a time when GOP lawmakers and President Donald Trump are gutting consumer protections, such as rolling back the post-financial crisis Dodd-Frank rules and putting the fate of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) in the hands of someone who once sponsored legislation to kill the agency, which he called a "sick, sad" joke.

"Consumers need to be assured that when they hand over personal information to companies such as retailers, banks, insurers, service providers, and credit reporting agencies, that those businesses will do everything they can to protect that private data from hackers and identity thieves, and that there's accountability for those who don't," Menendez said in a press release.

Menendez first announced he would pursue the legislation earlier this year after the Equifax data breach, in which some 143 million consumers' personal data was exposed.
