Don't rush out to buy a smaller carry-on bag just yet, air travelers.
The International Air Transport Association said Wednesday it was "pausing" its roll out of industry guidelines that would call for smaller carry-on bags than are currently permitted by many airlines.
The IATA, the main industry group for international carriers, announced the guidelines last week in what it said was an effort to address the problem of limited overhead storage space in tightly booked aircraft. But the guidelines were criticized by some as a profit grab by the industry that would cost fliers money by forcing them to buy smaller bags or pay to check the ones they've been carrying on up to now.
In announcing Wednesday's suspension of the voluntarily guidelines, the IATA said it was "beginning a comprehensive reassessment in light of concerns expressed, primarily in North America."
The "pause" was welcomed by U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), who this week co-signed a letter with fellow Senators urging airline executives to give fliers a break.
