The dream to have an independent Senior Center became a reality one year ago when the Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Center opened in Hackensack after years of delays. Today the center continues its struggle raising funds for day-to-day operations, and in the hope for a shuttle bus that will transport seniors from around the county to and from the center.

The center’s mission is to keep the seniors of Bergen County connected with their community. The center welcomes all older adults retired and working from all communities to ‘a place to come and be with friends and to make new friends’...

...On October 16 United States Senator Bob Menendez held a press conference at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Seniors Center to address concerns over rising Medicare premiums in the face a Social Security announcement that beneficiaries would not be receiving a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for just the third time in 40 years.

"Seniors living on fixed incomes should not have to decide between buying food or paying rent, and seeing a doctor," Sen. Menendez said. "We need to keep the promise of health care, a decent retirement, and a good, long life in which they will be cared for as part of our moral obligation."
