NEWARK, NJ - U.S. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) today announced $20,715,757 in combined federal Sandy relief grants for cleanup and repairs at the Passaic Valley Sewage Commission (PSVC) and to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to buyout 272 flood-prone properties in Sayreville and South River. The grants are provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Public Assistance grant program.

"These grant awards help keep New Jersey on its path to full recovery from Superstorm Sandy," said Sen. Menendez. "Not only will this funding pay to rebuild a critical public facility that was heavily damaged by the storm, it also helps protect residents and first-responders from the hazards associated with repeated flooding. I remain committed to ensuring our state continues to receive the resources necessary to come back better and stronger than before the storm."

"Superstorm Sandy hurt so many communities across New Jersey, but these grants allow New Jerseyans to take another step towards full recovery," Sen. Booker said. "This funding will make a real difference in the rebuilding effort and strengthen our state."

The funding announced today includes:

  • $16,715,756 to the PSVC for the use of force account and contract to repair the Sludge Heat Treatment Building damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy.
  • $2,896,000.00 to the NJDEP to fund the acquisition and demolition of 196 flood prone properties in Sayreville, Middlesex County, damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy.
  • $1,104,000.00 to the NJDEP to fund the acquisition and demolition of 76 flood prone properties in South River, Middlesex County, damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy.

The President signed the Superstorm Sandy Supplemental Appropriations bill into law last January, bringing the total Sandy aid enacted by Congress to $60.2 billion. The funding package included federal aid to help homeowners, businesses, and communities recover, and resources to rebuild coastal, transportation, and water infrastructure.
