Menendez Welcomes Administration’s Increase in Sanctions Against Government of Iran and Proliferation Network
July 12, 2012
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), author of the sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran, today released the following statement in response to the Obama Administration’s announcement of new sanctions on Iran in order to intensify the pressure on its government in light of the absence of any real progress in the P – 5+1 negotiations:
"I welcome the President's commitment to escalating pressure on Iran in absence of any real progress in the P-5+1 talks. The Administration and the Congress are partnering to enact every possible sanction on Iran and to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons capability. To that end, House Republicans should work with the Senate to pass the pending sanctions legislation on Iran, including further sanctions on the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) (imposing sanctions on any financial entity that facilitates transactions with NIOC and the NITC) and on ships and ship owners that assist Iran in evading United States and EU sanctions."
