Menendez, Lautenberg Announce More Than $4.6 Million To Support New Jersey Law Enforcement
June 27, 2012
WASHINGTON — Two days after announcing more than $9 million to put police officers back on the beat, U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today announced more than $4.6 million to support state and local New Jersey law enforcement agencies through the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Edward Byrne MemorialJustice Assistance Grant Program (JAG). The Byrne JAG program is designed to help state and local criminal justice agencies pay for technology, equipment, and training to prevent crimes in their communities.
"This federal funding will help state and local law enforcement agencies in New Jersey combat crime, " said Senator Lautenberg, a member of the Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds the Byrne JAG program. "Nothing is more important than keeping New Jersey communities safe, and this federal grant will help provide police agencies with resources to better investigate and prosecute crimes."
“I believe that protecting our families and keeping communities safe must be our top priority,” said Menendez. “Byrne grants are critical to ensuring State and local law enforcement can implement strategies to fight crime and meet local public safety needs and I will continue to fight for these important resources.”
The Byrne JAG program is the leading source of federal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. This year's funding will be used to complement state initiatives designed to fight crime through targeted investigations and prosecutions.
In June 2011, Lautenberg and Menendez joined Senate colleagues to write a letter to Senators Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Chairwoman and Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, to support continued funding of the Byrne JAG program in the FY 2012 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill, which is the source of the funding being announced today.
