Washington – Following the second effort by Senate Republicans to block consideration of the DISCLOSE Act in as many days, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) said he would continue to fight for full disclosure of the anonymous big money behind political election ads.  Tomorrow, Senator Menendez will join the bill’s author, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I) and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) for a press conference on Capitol Hill to continue the fight for disclosure of political spending.

Menendez said:

“Twice in two days, Senate Republicans have shown that when given a choice between standing on the side of wealthy corporations or the American people who elect them, they’ll follow the money every time. It’s unfortunate that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle didn’t seize this opportunity to do the right thing by voting for full disclosure.

“The goal of the DISCLOSE Act is simple: to shine a light on where the money is coming from and who is behind all of these political ads.  We aren’t telling these corporations or special interests that they can’t make political contributions. We just want them to step out of the shadows because the American people deserve to know who’s behind these Super PACs and what their real agendas are.

“If individual Americans have to disclose their political contributions, why is it that corporations, special interest groups and foreign companies operating here don’t have to? It’s clear Senate Republicans twice voted against the DISCLOSE Act because overwhelmingly they are receiving the benefits of this undisclosed, shadowy money, but is that really the American way? I don’t think so which is why I will side with the American electorate and continue the fight for full disclosure.”
