Menendez Applauds Obama Administration’s Action for DREAMERS
June 15, 2012
Washington – U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today applauded the announcement today by President Obama and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that the Administration would grant temporary relief from deportation to young people who came to the U.S. through no fault of their own– youth that would qualify for the DREAM Act. The announcement comes after years of sustained advocacy by Senators Durbin, Reid, Menendez, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Dream Act students and advocacy groups. Sen. Menendez and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have long advocated for immigration benefits for Dream Act eligible youth and the families of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.
“For all the young people who call this country their home but have been unable to fulfill their dreams, I am profoundly grateful to the President and the Administration for suspending the deportation of Dreamers,” said Menendez. “For these young men and women who want to become doctors, teachers, police officers and soldiers, this announcement will change their lives forever.”
To be eligible for this program, an individual must be present in the U.S. as of today’s date, must have been present for at least 5 years, must be under the age of 30, and must be a high school graduate, have a GED or be a veteran of the Armed Forces or Coast Guard. Individuals who are convicted of a felony are not eligible. Within 60 days, individuals who are not currently in removal proceedings will be able to apply. Individuals who are not in removal proceedings should wait for more information about the program before applying, and should consult with an attorney about whether they are eligible prior to submitting an application.
Menendez added: “With this action, people like Arina Grossu, who has lived in New Jersey with her family for 19 years, has a Masters degree and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with honors, will be able to live out her dreams and contribute to our country.”
