WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement regarding the Venezuelan presidential elections:

"I urge the Venezuelan electoral body to conduct a full audit and recount of ballots of yesterday's presidential elections," said Chairman Menendez. "An audit and full recount, actions also supported by the OAS, will ensure the Venezuelan people have the greatest possible confidence in a reported outcome. I believe it is critical for all parties to continue working together to resolve any concerns, included reported irregularities in select election proceedings. I commend the Venezuelan people on a remarkable turnout. Seventy-nine percent of Venezuelans voted, demonstrating a democratic zeal and a passion to participate in the future of their country. I urge the electoral body to honor the Venezuelan people's commitment to democracy and ensure to the greatest possible degree the validity of the election results."
